Ukraine in Jan 2017 buys coking coal for almost CAD 50 mln in Canada

Ukrainian companies in January 2017 imported coking coal for CAD 48.2 million ($36.2 million under the current exchange rate) from Canada, while in January 2016 no coking coal was imported, Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Roman Waschuk has told Interfax-Ukraine.

He said that British Columbia has large stocks of coking coal and production facilities. Supplies from the province could be increased if it is required.


Asked about importers of Canadian coal to Ukraine, he said that it was ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, but there could be other large Ukrainian metal companies among importers.


Waschuk also said that in 2016, coking coal imports of Ukraine totaled CAD 146 million ($109.6 million).


According to the State Statistics Service, imports of coal from Canada in 2016 was 841,900 tonnes for $94.37 million, while total imports of bituminous coal to Ukraine was 14.15 million for $1.415 billion. The key supplies of this coal were Russia (9.87 million tonnes for $860.07 million) and the United States (1.81 million for $211.01 million), while Canada was third.


Some 724,800 tonnes of bituminous coal was shipped from Australia to Ukraine last year for $79.13 million, 551,300 tonnes from Kazakhstan for $75.6 million and 349,000 tonnes from Poland for $40.58 million.


Ukraine exported 336,200 tonnes of bituminous coal for $33.96 million last year mainly to Slovakia ($26.31 million) and Russia ($7.48 million).
